The foster carers will be provided with training and clinical supervision by the therapy team which ensures that there is a consistent approach to the behaviour management of pupils both at home and at school. Foster carers will then be more able to manage higher levels of challenging behaviour because they can be confident that the child has a consistent, supportive and resilient school base which will minimise any need for exclusions. This integrated approach seeks to encourage carers to feel part of a multi-disciplinary team, rather than becoming isolated and too often overlooked in the decision making about the children in their care.
Carers are welcome to take part in the regular training sessions offered to the Compass staff team. These include foundation and intermediate level family therapy training courses accredited by the Association of Family Therapy. Carers will also be actively encouraged to participate in the research and service development opportunities at the Compass.
Where necessary foster carers are also provided with access to a short break service to ensure that they have sufficient time to meet their own needs so that they can continue to be physically and emotionally available to the children in placement.
Therapeutic support for pupils attending the virtual residential school is provided by the therapy team working within the Compass education provisions.

Compass Belton was the first of our therapeutic schools. It opened in 2009 with our first cohort of five pupils who had all been identified as requiring out of county placements. This provided an opportunity to make the necessary investment into developing a local service with the resilience, creativity and expertise required to meet the complex needs of these pupils and their families.
Maintaining these pupils in their local communities realised the savings necessary to expand the Compass in Belton, initially to 12 pupils and then, over time, to the current 24 places across KS2 and KS3. Classes have six pupils supported by a teacher and two teaching assistants. This high staff to pupil ratio allows staff to respond flexibly to the individual needs of all our learners and to the levels of challenging behaviour that pupils present at times.
The Compass school has been based in Lingwood since September 2015, having moved from its previous base in Norwich, which opened in 2014. The Lingwood site is in an old Victorian primary school building that has been a place of education for almost 150 years. This sense of history and the importance of the school building to the local community has helped to quickly establish the secure base that each of the schools need to provide the emotional containment that our staff and pupils need to work together creatively.
Lingwood has two classes with mixed groups of KS2 and KS3 pupils that are grouped in terms of their learning needs rather than strictly age or year groups. The wonderful space at Lingwood provides accommodation for the therapy and education teams to work in a fully integrated provision, creating the essential combination of therapy and education that is at the heart of our success to date.

Compass Pott Row
Our Compass school in the West of Norfolk is in the village of Pott Row, about 10 miles from Kings Lynn. This is the most recent Compass School to open, in April 2015 and provides places for 12 learners across KS2 and KS3. Alongside Norfolk County Council the Short Stay School for Norfolk has made a considerable investment in renovating a small Victorian village school that had been empty for a number of years. Bringing life, laughter and learning back to a traditional old school house has offered our first cohort of pupils the opportunity to be directly involved in the creation of their own learning environment.
Although it is a small school building the wonderful outdoor space at Pott Row provides a wealth of opportunities for our learning outside the classroom programme. Ongoing building work is helping to create the range of office spaces required to provide the therapeutic and administrative support to the education team, our pupils and their families.
